USPS watchdog: counterfeit labels cost $3.1B; crackdown snagged 2M paid parcels
A USPS Office of Inspector General audit released Sept. 10 estimates counterfeit shipping labels cost the Postal Service $3.1 billion over two years, while its interception process mistakenly pulled about 2 million legitimately paid packages. Sellers shipping via USPS face delays if their payment records are late, and tighter rules may follow.
The USPS Office of Inspector General (OIG) on Sept. 10 published an audit, "Efforts to Mitigate Counterfeit Postage" (report 25-072-R26), estimating that the Postal Service lost $3.1 billion in revenue from March 2024 through February 2026 by accepting packages with counterfeit postage labels. The OIG made 11 recommendations; USPS management agreed with eight and disagreed with three.
