Personalization that feels personal, not creepy

Good personalization feels like a helpful shop assistant; bad personalization feels like being watched. The line is simple: use what customers gave you knowingly, and never surface data they didn't know you had.

Personalization lifts repeat orders when it feels like service and kills trust when it feels like surveillance. The difference isn't the technology, it's the source of the data. Use what customers handed you knowingly (their zero-party answers, their own purchase history) freely; treat inferred or tracked data with care; and never show them you know something they never told you. Get the line right and recommendations feel personal, not creepy.

The same recommendation can feel like a great shop assistant or like being followed home. The difference is where the data came from.

Using what a customer told you or bought feels like service. Leaking what they never shared feels like surveillance. AI is great at generating relevant picks; your job is to keep them on the right side of the creepy line.

What you'll learn

  • Sort your data by how you got it
  • Recommend from what they chose or bought
  • Time replenishment from the usage cycle, gently
  • Personalize the return visit lightly
